TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.

-Paulo Freire (1970), Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Academic institutions are conservative and tend to perpetuate power hierarchies in our society. I am also a product of these institutions. Nevertheless, I pledge to recognize this fact and try to break down these structures in my classroom. The following are some beliefs that guide me:

  1. The classroom should be an open, safe, welcoming space for students to think and communicate without fear of being penalized (in the form of grades or other) or attacked.

  2. Everybody is an expert in something. The instructor may have more knowledge on certain topics, but students will have more knowledge on others.

  3. A course should be accessible to students of diverse background (including, but not limited to racial, ethnic, disability, age, social, economic, religious, gender, sexual orientation).
